Clothing manufacturers UK:
when to go overseas for denim

People search clothing manufacturers UK looking for a factory in Britain. For denim, the real choice is often UK-made versus overseas cut-make-wash in China or Cambodia.

This page compares cost direction, MOQ, fabric and wash capability, lead time, and “Made in” labelling. It then covers how a UK brand works with an overseas factory day to day, including import and payment.

Top Mondial manufactures in China and Cambodia, not the UK. If a UK factory is the better fit, the page says so. If overseas denim production fits, enquire.

Searching clothing manufacturers UK — start with denim

People searching clothing manufacturers UK are usually looking for a factory in Britain. This guide is for UK denim and jeans brands comparing a local CMT shop with an overseas denim factory.

A UK clothing manufacturer and an overseas denim plant are different businesses. Mill access, wash range and MOQ are not the same.

Capability, QC, communication and scale still belong on how to choose a denim manufacturer. This page covers geography and working practice.

Top Mondial is an overseas manufacturer. We do not operate a UK plant. See our factories.

UK clothing manufacturers vs overseas denim production

Rows are direction and typical factors, not a quote. Overseas numbers are Top Mondial site figures. How MOQ is counted: denim MOQ explained. Wash types: custom denim washes. China versus Cambodia as plants: China vs Cambodia denim manufacturing.

UK-made

A UK clothing manufacturer can be the right partner for small runs, origin labelling and short logistics. Ask that factory for its own MOQ, diary and wash set. Top Mondial does not sew in the UK.

Cost

  • Labour and small-run overhead usually mean a higher unit cost on denim at volume
  • Compare a landed overseas cost against that factory's own quote, not a generic UK average

MOQ

  • UK makers often accept smaller cuts
  • Ask per style, colour and wash

Fabric and wash

  • Many UK units are CMT on fabric the brand supplies, or a narrower wash set
  • Confirm mill access and wash range with that factory

Lead time

  • Shorter logistics: no ocean leg to the UK
  • Production time still depends on that factory's diary

Labelling

  • Garments sewn in the UK can be labelled Made in UK
  • Origin follows where the garment is made

Overseas (China / Cambodia)

Top Mondial manufactures in Zhejiang, China (from 2003) and in two Cambodia plants (from 2022). OEM and ODM. Not UK production.

Cost

  • Mill lots, wash batches and line time spread over more pieces
  • Unit cost usually falls as volume hits factory MOQ

MOQ

  • 500 pieces at the China plant and as the company figure
  • 2,000 pieces in Cambodia

Fabric and wash

  • China mill proximity and in-house wash as a company capability
  • Cambodia may still take fabric through the same mill network

Lead time

  • Average bulk around 30 days at the factory, plus ocean or air to the UK
  • Sampling around 7 days to develop and ship

Labelling

  • Made in China or Made in Cambodia according to the plant that sews
  • Origin is not Made in UK

When a UK factory is the better choice

Overseas is not always the answer.

UK factory is usually the fit when

The first drop sits below an overseas denim MOQ. See denim MOQ explained for how that number is counted. Stay in Britain when the product story requires Made in UK.

A UK factory also fits when you need garments in the UK in days, not factory time plus ocean; when you must walk the line the same week; or when you only need a sample room or a small CMT run.

Overseas is usually the fit when

Quantity meets 500 pieces in China or 2,000 pieces in Cambodia, and you need mill-backed fabric and a real wash range.

Unit cost at that volume matters more than origin on the label. You can work across time zones and wait for samples by courier.

Stay UK for development, overseas for bulk

Two factories means two QC languages. Treat a UK sample room plus overseas bulk as a caution, not a default plan.

If you later split China and Cambodia with one manufacturer, that model is on China vs Cambodia denim manufacturing.

How a UK brand works with an overseas denim factory

Time zones: China is about eight hours ahead of the UK, Cambodia about seven. During BST the gap is one hour less. Overlap is typically UK morning and factory afternoon.

Communication: Commercial contact is in English. Put decisions in writing: measurements, wash, trims. A UK Companies House number and consistent contacts speed account opening. See the company checklist for new factory accounts.

Samples: They are couriered, not walked over. Expect more than one round. See denim sampling explained. Developing a sample and shipping it typically takes around 7 days. That figure varies with fabric and wash.

Approvals: Photo and video of wash and construction are normal between physical samples. Lock the approved sample into the tech pack. See what is a denim tech pack.

Visits vs video: Buyers can visit the China and Cambodia plants (factories). Video line checks and third-party inspection are the alternative when a flight is not justified. Inspection stages: denim quality control / AQL.

How an overseas denim order runs from the UK

One tech pack and an approved sample govern bulk. The diagram is the nine-step path from tech pack review to QC. It is the same path whichever plant sews.

Nine steps a denim manufacturer follows from tech pack review to quality control

After packing, goods go ocean or air to the UK, then import. The factory bulk window of around 30 days is not door-to-UK time.

UK import basics for overseas denim

Modes: Samples and rush goods often fly. Bulk usually goes by ocean. Confirm the mode on the order.

Paperwork: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, and origin consistent with where the garment was made. The buyer's broker or freight forwarder files the import.

Who pays duty: Incoterms decide who books freight and who is importer of record. Top Mondial's typical new-customer structure is FOB. The UK buyer (or their forwarder) usually arranges main carriage and import, and pays duty and VAT as the importer.

Current import steps sit on gov.uk.

China-origin and Cambodia-origin cartons are not mixed into one origin claim. See China vs Cambodia denim manufacturing.

Payment terms a UK brand can expect

Same international structures as other buyers. For a new FOB relationship, expect 30/70 T/T: deposit, production, then balance before shipment. Open account is not the starting point.

Full structures, deposits and credit insurance: payment terms explained.

A UK company pack (legal name, Companies House number, VAT ID if you have one) is what the factory can look up. See the company checklist for new factory accounts.

Terms can be reviewed later with order history. That is not a promise of open account.

Denim manufacturing for UK brands at Top Mondial

We are a jeans and denim manufacturer with our own plants in Zhejiang, China, and two in Cambodia, not the UK. Tour the sites on factories.

OEM and ODM. MOQ 500 pieces in China; 2,000 in Cambodia. Average bulk lead time around 30 days, then shipping to the UK.

If Made in UK is required, we are the wrong factory. If overseas denim production from the UK is the fit, send quantity (by style, colour and wash), target price and Incoterm (for example FOB), delivery window into the UK, and a tech pack or reference garment.
